Smoke control areas are areas where people and businesses must not:

  • emit smoke from a chimney
  • buy or sell unauthorised fuel for use in a smoke control area unless it is used in an ‘exempt’ fireplace (appliances which are approved to use in smoke control areas)

The relevant legislation is the Clean Air Act 1993.

Fuels that have been approved for use in Wales can be found here.

Appliances that have been approved for use in Wales can be found here.

Bilingual lists of approved fuels and fireplaces will be available on these links soon.
