Woodland Opportunity Map - Deep Peat
Welsh Government
Deep peat is an important resource in Wales as a carbon store, contributing to the regulation of water flow and supporting specialist habitats. It is under threat from climate change and land management techniques including cultivation and draining. The UK forestry Standard (UKFS) requires that woodland creation should not take place on soils with peat exceeding 50cm in depth or in line with Country Guidance. Such areas of deep peat must be removed from woodland creation proposals.
The ‘Peatlands of Wales’ map (2022) provides an updated distribution of peat across Wales. It forms part of a series of peatland maps including peat evidence score and carbon stock estimates displayed on Data map Wales. The data layers were created on a 50m grid whereby the presence of peat were elucidated from a range of sources for each 50m grid cell across Wales. Each grid cell is given an evidence score defining the level of confidence in the presence of peat. This dataset provides an outline of all the 50m grid cells that have a peatland evidence score of 2 or greater.
Full details of the sources of data used to build this map as well as the methodologies used to define the level of evidence for the presence of peat are presented in the Peatlands of Wales mapping methodology report.
