Artificial Grass Pitches Wales
Sport Wales
Artificial Grass Pitches (AGPs) are a synthetic alternative to grass, providing an all-weather surface for pitch sports, in particular, hockey, rugby and football. AGPs are also known as 2G pitches, 3G pitches, Artificial Turf Pitches (ATPs) or Synthetic Turf Pitches (STPs).
2G pitches are synthetic surfaces filled or dressed with sand and the grass pile element is usually short (typically between 12mm – 25mm). They are predominantly used for Hockey and recreational Football.
3G pitches are made with synthetic turf and rubber infill and are normally long pile (typically between 55mm – 65mm). Sports like Football, Rugby Union, Rugby League play on these type of surfaces and for Rugby Union and Rugby League, they are usually installed with a shock pad. Technologies beyond 3G, such as 4G and 5G, are being tested but have not yet been recognised by sports governing bodies.
These data provide information about all known indoor and outdoor artificial grass sport pitches in Wales. It includes the location, size and surface-type of the pitches. The dataset has been drawn from a 2021 facility audit commissioned by Sport Wales and has been shared with local authorities for validation, prior to publication.
The dataset is not definitive and is under constant review. Owners and managers of artificial grass pitches are encouraged to inform us if any information about their facilities is inaccurate or has changed, and/or if their facility is not present in the dataset.
Please contact us if you have any queries about this dataset or if you want to report any inaccuracies or updates
