The National Peatland Action Programme (NPAP) coordinates peatland restoration action across Wales and reports on restoration activity to the Welsh and UK Governments.

This Welsh Peatland Restoration Activities layer consolidates maps of restoration work undertaken across Wales directly by the National Peatland Action Programme (NPAP) in NRW as well as its partner organisations.

Restoration activities are presented as polygons containing attributes that detail the broad activity type, site, delivery organisation, start and end date of restoration work.

To ensure the consistency and transparency of data recording and reporting, a standardised reporting system is defined in the Restoration activities on peatlands in Wales: activity classification and codes.  Restoration activities are divided into five broad activity types: Hydrological Management, Erosion Control, Tree Management, Vegetation Management and Grazing.

Hydrological Management aims to reverse the impact of harmful activities that have resulted in adverse changes to hydrological regimes.

Erosion Control aims to reduce the effect of erosional features such as haggs and gullies. These features expose areas of bare peat which are prone to further degradation if left uncontrolled.

Tree Management aims to reduce the impact of trees on peatland. Most Tree Management techniques for peatland restoration involve conifer plantation, there are also activities addressing the presence of broadleaf trees.

Vegetation Management aims to control the dominance of small numbers of abundant species (e.g. Molinia, Calluna) to ensure the recovery and persistence of mire vegetation.

Grazing activities aim to restore and manage peatlands through modifying grazing regimes.

This map was last updated to include restoration activities reported to 31st March 2026.

Restoration activities are initially recorded by NPAP and partners as points, polylines and polygons in accordance with the Restoration activities on peatlands in Wales: activity classification and codes. Restoration activity polygons are then created to represent the area of the peatland targeted by each type of activity in line with consensus and best available knowledge.

NPAP staff and partners are required to submit GIS data to evidence their restoration work. ESRI shapefiles were created using the spatial reference system OSGB 1936, formatted using a template to standardise data collection.
