Resource Areas (RAs) are broad areas that describe, for some sectors, the distribution of a particular resource that has the potential to be used or is used. The wave energy RAs were derived from the Atlas of UK Marine Renewable Energy Resources (ABPmer, 2008) and from areas defined in the Marine Renewable Energy Strategic Framework (MRESF) (RPS, 2011). The MRESF dataset represents the areas with most potential for wave energy developments in Welsh waters, as identified by RPS (2011) using renewables atlas data as well as additional inshore modelling. Devices were also categorised into wholly submerged and surface piercing types. Resource areas were mapped for six categories based on location and device type.

Derivation of RAs

Resource Areas (RAs) are broad areas that describe for some sectors the distribution of a particular resource that has the potential to be used or is used.

RA derivation does not include environmental factors, the assessment of which must be undertaken before issuing a licence; at which point more detail is known on any proposal.

Please refer to the full RA derivation text for this sector and others.
