- Emissions of radioactive substances from non-nuclear sites - OSPAR Report Data
- Abstract
Holders of a Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) open-source permit, including disposal to the environment, are required to report annually to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) their emissions of certain non-nuclear radioactive substances. This emissions data is collated as part of a UK dataset and is reported to the OSPAR Commission (OSPAR is the mechanism by which 15 Governments and the EU cooperate to protect the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic).
OSPAR’s non-nuclear reporting covers:
- the oil and gas sector
- the medical sector
- universities and research centres
- the phosphate industry
- titanium dioxide pigment manufacturers
- primary steel manufacturers
- radiochemical production
Not all these sectors are represented in Wales.
The substances required to be reported are:
- Carbon-14
- Chromium-51
- Hydrogen-3
- Iodine-125
- Iodine-131
- Lead-210
- Phosphorus-32
- Polonium-210
- Radium-226
- Radium-228
- Sulphur-35
