Holders of a Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) open-source permit, including disposal to the environment, are required to report annually to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) their emissions of certain non-nuclear radioactive substances. This emissions data is collated as part of a UK dataset and is reported to the OSPAR Commission (OSPAR is the mechanism by which 15 Governments and the EU cooperate to protect the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic).

OSPAR’s non-nuclear reporting covers:

  • the oil and gas sector
  • the medical sector
  • universities and research centres
  • the phosphate industry
  • titanium dioxide pigment manufacturers
  • primary steel manufacturers
  • radiochemical production

Not all these sectors are represented in Wales.

The substances required to be reported are:

  • Carbon-14
  • Chromium-51
  • Hydrogen-3
  • Iodine-125
  • Iodine-131
  • Lead-210
  • Phosphorus-32
  • Polonium-210
  • Radium-226
  • Radium-228
  • Sulphur-35
