Title
Disused Coal Tips in Wales Map
Abstract

This dataset was last updated in May 2025.

This dataset shows the locations and boundaries of disused coal tips in Wales. This includes disused tips of ALL categories (categories D ,C, B, A, and R).

This dataset includes an attribute that shows the Unique IDentifier for each tip [UID], its category rating [Category], the Local Authority it is located in [Authority], and the last date each disused coal tip has been last inspected [Last Inspected] on behalf of the Welsh Government by the Mining Remediation Authority (MRA).

This data will be refreshed twice annually (once in the spring and once in the autumn) to align with the continuing programme of inspections for category C and D disused tips.

This dataset is part of a programme of work to review and improve coal tip safety in Wales being delivered by Welsh Government and its partners.

Edition
1st Edition of Data showing ALL Disused Coal tips May 2025
Purpose

The purpose of this dataset is to disclose the locations and categories of disused coal tips in Wales. Publishing this data is part of a commitment to make this information available to the people and communities of Wales by Welsh Government.

The boundaries of the disused tips have been created from a range of data sources; historic maps, coal mine plans, geological information, aerial imagery and Digital Terrain Models derived from LiDAR data.

Data quality

This dataset has been created by utilising a range of different source information. Care has been taken to ensure that this dataset is comprehensive, consistent, and accurate but it should be noted that the precise location of disused tip boundaries are an interpretation of the best evidence that was available at the time of it's creation and may not be 100% accurate if viewed at very low scales.

This dataset may be subject to change over time in response to management activity e.g. the findings of inspections or outcomes of maintenance.
