Title: WOM21 Diffuse Water Pollution
Abstract: This layer shows pollutant impacts on water quality within Water Framework Directive (WFD) sub-catchments – specifically focused on Phosphate (P), Nitrogen (N) and sediment. This is based on modelled loading (agricultural and non-agricultural) and run-off combined with P in-water quality (WFD P status monitoring), and modelled N in-water concentrations (accounting for the safe drinking water threshold). Note that WFD P status targets are set at different levels for each monitored waterbody, based on alkalinity and altitude. These are combined to show which sub-catchments we think pollutant run-off is likely to be coming from, based on modelled land management, and which sub-catchments may have local water quality issues. Planting trees in those areas may prevent or intercept runoff that is affecting water quality. This layer shows areas with the highest potential for mitigating diffuse water pollution. Planting trees in the highest scoring sub-catchments will have the highest potential for intercepting diffuse water pollution. Scores range from 0 (no identified benefits from woodland creation) to 5 (multiple identified benefits from woodland creation).
