Record Welsh Place Names
Help us capture place names not yet recorded on digital maps
We want to ensure that as many place names in Wales as possible are collected and shared so that they can be used now and by future generations. Before you begin, please take a moment to review our Privacy Notice to understand how your data will be used
At present, many Welsh and historic place names do not appear on online maps. These may be names for:
- mountains and hills
- streams and waterfalls
- fields and agricultural features
- landmarks and other geographic features
- houses
- businesses
- bridges
- old mills, works or factories
- ruins
If you have names for these, or any other elements of the Welsh natural, topographic or built landscape, you can help us by using this online form to record them. We’ll share the information with Wikipedia, Mapio Cymru / Open Street Map, and the List of Historic Place Names of Wales, so that the names you have contributed appear on as many different resources as possible, encouraging their use.
You can help us record place names by completing the form below. To do so:
- Find the location where the name should be on the map. You can zoom in and move around using your mouse or the tools on the right-hand side.
- Click on the map to select the location of the place name you want to add. If the name relates to a wide area or a number of locations (a woodland, for instance), please try to put your point towards the centre.
- Complete the form fields that follow. Fields marked with a * are mandatory.
- Click Submit.
Uploading photographs
- You may include photographs of the place you are recording.
- Do not take photos that include people.
- If you’re uploading a photograph which includes someone else’s property, you must obtain their permission first.
- Make sure any photographs are taken from a public place or right of way, or with express permission of the landowner.
- If you have something that can be used to provide scale (a backpack, walking pole, water bottle etc), position it in the image, ensuring that it doesn’t obscure anything important.
