Title
Seabed Tidal Stream Energy Constraints
Abstract

These layers represent hard constraints on the development of the seabed tidal stream resource within the Welsh National Marine Plan area, and soft contraints which might have implications for any future development of the resource.

A hard constraint refers to a spatial consideration (such as existing activities or infrastructure) that effectively prevents new development for a specific sector. These hard constraints layers were used as part of work to refine Resource Areas, so that any areas covered by hard constraints were excluded from Refined Resource Areas and Strategic Resource Areas.

A soft constraint is a spatial consideration which relates to a particular sector and may be relevant for a particular project.  The relative significance and implication of a soft constraint or set of soft constraints will depend upon the nature of the project being considered.

The soft constraints mapping work undertaken for the refined Resource Areas and Strategic Resource Areas derivation involved grouping soft constraints into four categories:

  1. Very low risk of conflict and/or very good potential for co-existence.
  2. Low risk of conflict and or good potential for co-existence.
  3. Medium risk of conflict and/or low potential for co-existence.
  4. High risk of conflict and/or very limited potential for co-existence.
