<p>The purpose of this spatial dataset it to give some representation of marine heritage assets that have been recorded within the National Monuments Record Wales. This dataset was produced by the Royal Commission for the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and has been made available to the public as part of our commitment to improving access and stewardship of marine data as one of the accredited marine historic environment data archiving center for the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN).</p>
<p>This spatial dataset comprises of point data relating to all of the marine heritage assets that have been recorded within the National Monuments Record Wales by the Royal Commission for the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.</p>
<p>1.1 Background</p>
<p>The Royal Commission plays a leading role in the recording of the historic environment both terrestrial and marine. The National Monuments Record of Wales is a national collection of information about the historic environment of Wales. The National Monuments Record of Wales contains details of many thousands of archaeological sites, monuments, buildings and maritime sites in Wales, together with an index to the drawings, manuscripts and photographs held in the NMRW archive collections. The information contained within the National Monuments Record of Wales includes known or identified sites and documentary references which provide an indication of the archaeological potential of any area of seabed.</p>
<p>The Royal Commission became an accredited data archiving center for the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) in 2016. As a member of MEDIN the Royal Commission is dedicated to working in partnership with other UK organizations to improving access to marine data.</p>
<p>1.2 Frequency of Update</p>
<p>The National Monuments Record is an ever evolving resource which is being constantly updated by new discoveries and research of the historic environment. To ensure that the information that is provided on Data Map Wales is up to date, this dataset will be updated on a quarterly basis.</p>
<p>1.3 Depictions</p>
<p>This dataset comprises entirely of sites that have been recorded within the marine environs of Wales. Each record has been recorded from either marine geophysical survey data or documentary and historic sources. The positional accuracy of each site may vary due to the source material. The positional accuracy of sites is an ongoing continual process with reviews occurring on an annual basis.</p>
