Abstract
Designation background information: In recognition of the different physical and socio-economic characteristics across the regions, the European Union introduced the Less Favoured Area (LFA) designation to support farming where production conditions are difficult. The criteria for LFA designation were first established in European legislation in 1975 (Directive 75/268 EEC and accompanying measures).   Area A (Severely Disadvantaged)   In general the most severely disadvantaged land, when measured in terms of the handicaps to farming. These handicaps are brought about by factors such as soil, relief, aspect or climate, either singly or in combination. Most of Area A was originally granted Less Favoured Area status in 1975.   Areas adopted under Article 2.2 of Council Directive 75/268/EEC (O.J. No.L128, 19.5.1975, p1), which list was contained in the Annex to Council Directive 75/276/EEC (O.J. No.L128, 19.5.1975, p239), as amended by Council Directive 76/685/EEC (O.J. No.L231, 20.8.1976, p30), now repealed, and is now contained in the Annex to the Council Directive 84/169/EEC (O.J. No.L82, 26.3.1984, p67).   Area B (Disadvantaged)   In terms of the handicaps to farming it is less severely disadvantaged than Area A land. Land designated as less favoured in February 1984 and extended in December 1990.   Areas adopted under Article 2.2 of Council Directive 75/268/EEC, which list is contained in the Annex to the Council Directive 84/169/EEC, as amended by Commission Decision 91/25/EEC (O.J. No.L16, 22.1.1991, p25).   To note: the data was captured in the early 1990’s by heads-up digitising from OS 1:25,000 paper and Statutory Instrument maps. As such, the boundaries will not necessarily align to current mapping.
